Alexis Ames longs to be normal. But normal seems to be unattainable due to her ability to heal very quickly, perpetual “new girl” status, and her never-aging mother. Alexis and her mother, Sophia, are forced to move constantly if Alexis ability is discovered or people start to notice Sophia never ages. Alexis doesn’t know exactly why she and her mother are different, those secrets are kept under lock and key by Sophia. Alexis does know that she will one day never age, just like her mother, after she goes through a ritual called the Ang’ dora. When Alexis moves to Florida she figures that it will be like any other town where she will be the new girl, the freak except this time she will be in college. But, Alexis is mistaken, there’s something different about this time and that difference is named Tristan.
Tristan is drop-dead gorgeous, smart, talented, and strangely…interested in her. He shows up in every one of her classes with a private smile and wink, only for her. While Alexis welcomes the interest from a boy with supermodel good looks, she questions it. Boys have never shown much interest in her, they can always sense that there’s just something not right about her, and she’s automatically labeled as a freak. But Tristan is different. He can’t be around Alexis enough it seems. But when she introduces Tristan to her mother, Sophia is anything but welcoming. Soon, Alexis discovers that Tristan is not all he seems. Tristan has a secret too, a secret that will reveal things Alexis didn’t even know about herself. As the plot unfolds Alexis and Tristan are forced to turn their lives upside down when they discover their lives have been intertwined for hundreds of years.
Promise is the first installment in Kristie Cook’s Soul Savers series. Cook does an excellent job of creating a fascinating fantasy world that combines immortals, healers, ancient societies, and even some magic thrown in. It’s a wonderful stew of fantasy characters and addicting plot line. Granted, there are a few plot holes, and definitely some aspects borrowed from other novels, but overall Cook does an excellent job. Promise definitely held my attention right up to the last page and left me wanting to know what was next. The next installment in the series Purpose is out in stores now. I recommend this book to fantasy novel readers who enjoy the old classics of the fantasy world mixed with a new tangy twist of characters. Promise is a delightful cocktail of original meets extraordinary.

I don't read much fantasy, so I'll have to think about this one. I'm glad you loved it so much.
ReplyDeleteOh, this does promise to be interesting! I like the sound of the plot and think it sounds like something my daughter and I would both love. Thanks for the delectable review, Stacy! I must check this one out!
ReplyDeleteFantastic review! My interest in the fantasy genre has been rekindled because of Game of Thrones. So I will be adding this to my to-read list.
