Every book, every volume you see here, has a soul. The soul of the person who wrote it and of those who read it and lived and dreamed with it. Every time a book changes hands, every time someone runs his eyes down its pages, its spirit grows and strengthens. ~The Shadow of the Wind

A Song for My Mother by Kat Martin: Book Review

A Song for My Mother

I wrote a song for my mother, but I never
played the notes. It spoke of the love I felt
for her, my gratitude for all she had done.
It told her how much I owed her for
the years of her life she gave me.

I wrote a song for my mother,
but I never sang the words.

Now she is gone and the song
is only a fading memory, a soft ache
that reminds me of the unsung melody
locked away in my heart.

Mothers and daughters can share the tenderest of moments.  And yet, the wounds we inflict upon each other can also cut deeper than any blade.  A Song for My Mother has Marly returning home after fleeing twelve years prior in the dead of the night.  Marly's 10 year old daughter, Katie, has recently gotten out of the hospital from undergoing aggressive treatments for a brain tumor.  Katie has been begging her mother to please allow her to finally meet her Grandmother.  What ensues is a bitter daughter slowly coming to terms with her past while her own daughter, Katie, thrives in her grandmother's loving attentiveness.

The subsequent bitterness, anger and lack of forgiveness displayed by Marly throughout A Song for My Mother create a character that was hard for me to empathize with.  I wanted to shake her and say I'm sure she was not a perfect mom all the time.  For her part, Grandma Winnie (Marly's mom/Katie's Grandma), had perfected the art of "silence is golden" and knowing when to hold your tongue.  Katie was the adorable child whom everyone loves except the town bully. And the town sheriff who takes a liking to Marly ~ let's just say widowhood had made him even more marriageable material if there's even such a thing! That, and he pursues Marly, in a charming, respectable manner befitting a small town!

This book is the 2nd in the Dreyerville series; the first being The Christmas Clock.  I have not read the first one yet, and I did not feel as though I had missed anything by not reading it prior to A Song for My Mother.  Although now I would like to go back and read the first one as it is a quaint series set in small-town Michigan.
The author is giving away a gorgeous Italian music box at her site.  To enter, visit here.
