Have you ever watched a child take his first steps? Walk into Kindergarten and away from a parent's warm embrace? Graduate high school? Leave home for college?
With each of these milestones, a mother faces a bittersweet victory. In
The Goodbye Quilt
, Linda is accompanying her only child, Molly, on a road-trip across country to move into her dorm for her freshman year at college. While on the trip, Linda is trying so hard to finish the quilt she has been working on of all the important pieces of scraps and clothing she has saved throughout Molly's 18 years of life. There's the yellow tube top Linda was wearing when she discovered she was pregnant with Molly, the kindergarten outfit, ribbon from Linda's mother, so many pieces of memories come together to form the quilt.
I have been a fan of Susan Wiggs ever since I read
Summer at Willow Lake,

and subsequently the entire Lakeshore Chronicles. I have always enjoyed the "real" people Ms. Wiggs writes about. Feelings are fleshed out, families don't always live in mansions or marry well.
The Goodbye Quilt
is a multi-layered love story. The essence of the storyline is about Linda and Molly with a sub-focus on the quilt. Then there are the parents, Linda and Dan. What happens to them now that it will be just the two of them again? and there is Molly's boyfriend that she is leaving behind, Travis. What will happen to their relationship - will it survive the long-distance? The beauty of the book lies in the love story between the mother and the daughter....reading the arguments, the makeups and everything in-between....I felt like Ms. Wiggs had lived in my house with me and my daughters!
