Every book, every volume you see here, has a soul. The soul of the person who wrote it and of those who read it and lived and dreamed with it. Every time a book changes hands, every time someone runs his eyes down its pages, its spirit grows and strengthens. ~The Shadow of the Wind

Rage by Jackie Morse Kessler: Book Review

I have to admit, I love the concept - the Four Horsemen from the Apocalypse...Death comes to Lisabeth Lewis' home to give her the mantle and sword for Famine in the book Hunger (see my review here). Lisabeth struggles with her new role as Famine even as her anorexia threatens to literally kill her.

In the second book of the Apocalypse series, Rage, Melissa Miller is given the long white box from a delivery man (Death) who happens to look eerily like a famous dead rock star.  And so it begins again. We learn that Melissa's parents are fully engaged in their own lives, oblivious to their oldest daughter's pain, rage, and cutting.  After a bullying scene out of stuff that nightmares are made of, Melissa must make the ultimate choice when her cutting goes too far - take on the mantle of War and become one of the Four Horsemen or perish from suicide.

Like I said, I think the concept of these books is fantastic. I thoroughly enjoyed the first one. Rage had some good elements - The character of Death was a bit more comical, we met Pestilence for the first time, and cutting is introduced as a real and serious problem; however, this one just did not work for me. I'm not sure if it's because I know quite a bit about this subject and many parts did not ring true, or if I just did not feel  emotionally involved with Melissa.  The characters were difficult to feel sympathetic toward or connect with, other than the couple of laughs from Death, I felt the characters were two-dimensional.  But, I think the cover totally rocks!!! And, what the author is doing with a portion of the proceeds is freaking awesome!!!  If you've never heard of the To Write Love on Her Arms or TWLoHA, I highly encourage you to look them up.  Buy a t-shirt!  And I'm thinking that since we were introduced to Pestilence in this book, I have a feeling book no. 3 will be all about sickness. I can't wait for it!

If you've read Rage, shoot me an email or leave me a comment - there's a couple of scenes I'd really enjoy talking with someone else about.

Many thanks to Graphia via NetGalley for the complimentary copy to review.

  2. I have to read the first book, Hunger. It has such a unique premise - combining the Four Horsemen from the Apocalypse with an eating disorder!

  3. This doesn't sound like the book for me.

  4. I am sorry that this one didn't work out as well for you as the first one did, but I am still interested in both of these books as they sound very unique and deal with some of the serious issues that teens face. I am thinking of buying Hunger for my daughter and I, and seeing how that goes. Thanks for the incredibly insightful and honest review, Stacy!

  7. I'm just about to post my own review. Like you, Hunger worked for me; this one, not so much! But I'm still looking forward to the next two books.
